General description of the collection: The Lowry Hinch papers include thirty-three miscellaneous letters sent to various individuals, primarily to Mr. Lowry Hinch of New Haven, Illinois, during the Civil War period, mostly by friends and relatives in the Union Army. Twelve letters written by members of the 29th Illinois Infantry Regiment, September 10, 1861-June 23, 1862. Other units represented in the correspondence are: 7th Illinois Cavalry Regiment, November 1, 1861-February 17, 1862; 56th Illinois Infantry Regiment, February 19-April 26, 1862; 63rd Illinois Infantry Regiment, October 15, 1862-May 21, 1863; 3rd Indiana Cavalry Regiment (Right Wing), March 11, 1862, and June 9, 1864; Battery B, Kentucky Artillery, December 29, 1861-April 29, 1862; 11th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, March 10, 1862; 23rd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, October 5, 1862; 13th New Hampshire Infantry Regiment, November 20, 1862; 3rd New York Cavalry Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment (7th Pennsylvania Reserves), December 4, 1861. Three letters from civilians: one denouncing Southerners, April 21, 1861; one reporting on civilian defense work at Cairo, Illinois, October 15, 1861; and one recounting Illinoisans' outrage at the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, April 18, 1862. Also included is a poem by H.V. Osborne, ON THE DEATH OF CAPT. ROBERTS.
